Matt Simmons of Melbourne guitar pop act The Suits returns with a new project: The Barebones.

Fans of the finely-crafted guitar pop of The Suits were saddened when the band dissolved a few years back. But all that meant is that frontman Matt Simmons had time to craft the music for his new group The Barebones.

We check in on the new act – which shares Suits members – and Matt explains the break where he created the new sounds, how he assembled the band, songwriting strike-rates, distilling that sweet retro sound, songs about modern sexual mores, and the rest.

The Libertines by Mary Boukouvalas
