One of the most potent songs of the Holden Brothers Travelling Circus is ‘Kill Party’.
The song written by Mick Ryan and Mark Holden, tells of the treatment of Aboriginal people in the Victoria town of Bell Post Hill in the 1800s.
Mick says of the song, “Mark’s family settled in Indented Heads in the 1850s. That is Wathaurong country and I live on Wathaurong country. When he contacted me about wanting to learn more about the community in which his family settled we sat down and we talked about some of the stories. I think one of the stories that really hit a nerve with him is about a place in Geelong called Bell Post Hill which sits on top of the valley. They used to have a bell there which they would ring. Hence the name Bell Post Hill. They would send out a ‘Kill Party’ to kill aboriginal people coming in on their journey to the Wathaurong community. We sat down and came up with this song.
“All the names in the song are historically correct,” adds Mark.
